Field Note: Words that name Seasons
I've started noticing something I recognise, but sometimes can't quite explain. Every so often, a word arrives. I don't go looking for it. It just surfaces and then it stays, quietly becoming the thing I reach for, until one day I realise it's been naming or reflective of the season I'm in.
It's not a word I've chosen so much as one that's emerged. As if the mind, moving through a stretch of life, reaches for a single word to hold it. To make it graspable. And only later, looking back, do I see how precisely it fit. It's sometimes pretty definitive.
Last year, the word was patina. This year, it's something else entirely. The two couldn't feel more different, and that's the point. The word changed because the season did. The language is a kind of readout. A quiet instrument, measuring a pressure I can't always name directly.
What I keep wondering is whether everyone does this, and just doesn't stop to notice (or I don't stop to ask?)
I don't have a neat answer. Only the noticing. That the words come when they're needed, name what they name, and then, when the season turns, quietly make way for the next one.
