Perspective: Culture
Everything flows from character. It's the one thing you can't train, and it's non-negotiable. I don't compromise on hiring people with high integrity, and I expect the same standard throughout the organization. Beyond that, transparency, direct communication, the willingness to escalate bad news immediately, it all rests on character. If the foundation cracks, everything else becomes theatre.
I operate as a co-leader. My job is to shape strategy alongside the CEO, executive team and board, then build and / or grow something real from that vision. I thrive on novel problems, challenges that haven't been solved, that require building confidence in ourselves and our stakeholders. And I want to do it in a way that energizes the team, not drains it. That matters as much as the outcome.
Decision-making at scale means making bigger calls with less data. That's just reality. So I focus on getting quality intelligence fast. I source direct, not filtered through layers. I time-box, gather what I can in the time available, then decide. And I keep the team in the thinking from day one, not as an afterthought.
I stress-test my own assumptions hard. I flip the question: "Why wouldn't we do this?" and I ask people to argue against my direction, not just for it. Safe dissent is non-negotiable. But once I decide, I own it. If someone with domain expertise disagrees strongly, I'll usually defer. If I don't, I explain why and make clear: I am accountable for this decision, not you.
The executive team is my first team. We operate as a unit. We don't leak. Everyone hears the same message from me. We disagree in the room and walk out together.
What energizes me is punching above our weight. Give me an impossible challenge, limited resources, a compressed timeline, high stakes, and the right team in the right tone, and I'll find a way to make it happen. It's not comfort I'm after. It's that moment when you give people a task that seems unattainable, and they find a way. Overcoming odds. Being against the clock, against constraints, against assumptions, and still delivering.
I want to be remembered as ambitious and fearless, someone not prepared to accept the status quo when it's clearly wrong. Straight-talking. A creator of opportunity, opening doors for people that wouldn't otherwise exist. A developer of talent, sponsoring grads, mentoring, giving back. High integrity. Approachable and kind, but also steely and tough. Resilient under pressure. And visionary, providing a path forward on an adventure people wouldn't have had access to without someone carving that path.
That's the culture I build. That's how I show up.
